E3 2019: EA Play | Press Conference Rambles
2019’s EA Play show had some major issues we’ve already covered, but that opening hour or so, the part that was just Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Apex Legends, was impressive. Fallen Order looks derivative, but potentially great. It has third person movement and traversal reminiscent of Uncharted but the combat of something like Dark Souls (or maybe Sekiro is a better comparison). The lightsaber works like a lightsaber should, which is always nice. I personally hope it’s a longer game since the whole thing is a single player experience, but I have faith in Respawn Entertainment’s ability to make a game worth your money. And speaking of Respawn, they dove deep into what to expect from Season 2 of Apex Legends.
After that, the EA show took a huge step backward. They focused on Battlefield V DLC, this year’s FIFA and Madden, hinted at the continued existence of Anthem, and closed with a new expansion for The Sims 4. None of these things were bad, but they’re all known quantities. It’s hard to be excited about them confirming that the games they make every single year will continue to be made every single year, no matter how good they look. More than anything, them spending that much time on patches and updates made it look like EA simply doesn’t have any games. They also never mentioned EA Origin Premier, the subscription service they just launched on PC. I bet that tells us everything we need to know about that.
